If you are building a business then you should know that success or failure depends upon your leadership and management skills.
Great sales skills might earn you a reasonable amount, but to truly excel and make your business as profitable as possible you need to ensure that your leadership and management skills are honed.
If you eventually want to be able to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour then you need to learn how to lead leaders and mould your staff into potential future managers, so you can rest easy knowing that your business is in safe hands.
Consider how you run your business to discover whether you are leading and managing effectively.
Example 1: If you are the only leader within your business, for instance if everyone in your organisation turns to you for final decisions, then you are actually managing more than leading.
Example 2: If you don’t think there is anyone else within your business who could step in and fill your shoes at a moment’s notice then you are not leading, you are managing. Often managers can be secretive about the ins and outs of what they do.
This can be due to factors such as job insecurity – many managers worry that if someone can do their job just as well as they can then that could make them redundant.
Effective leaders understand the importance of being able to run things smoothly, so they will make sure there are others who understand exactly how the business is run and could take over at any time.
Being a strong leader means showing that you want the business to be a success, rather than viewing your own individual success as the most important factor. A good leader should be secure in the knowledge that if something were to happen to them the business would not be adversely affected.
Example 3: if you excel at managing the day to day running of your business but find it hard to implement changes and new developments in your team then you are managing and not leading. Many start-up businesses will enjoy great success at the beginning of the venture, but often they hit a wall and don’t develop and increase as they should.
A great leader will be able to continue to bring fresh energy and excitement to their business. Not only that but they will also be able to continue to motivate and inspire others to do the same.
Whether you are already a manager or aspiring towards management and leadership these examples should illustrate how to become the most effective leader you can be and ensure that your business enjoys continued growth and success.
